First, consider the amounts S109.000.000 million in 1938 and $148,000,000 in 1946 deducted for depreciation.

If consumers "took a beating" by getting "only 66 percent of goods and services produced (in 1946 compared with 72 percent in 1938 when production was only half of the 1946 total," it is a nice kind of beating to take because it would represent more goods and services per capita and in toto than in 1938. wiS In 1946 the amount available was $331 million and the amount paid to stockholders was $245 million. The amount of $84 million retained is the highest ever and it is an index of the judgment of executives that the conditions today are highly unstable and that the retained amounts of the stockholders' money are needed to guard against hazards of cost increases of materials and wages, possible drops in prices when competition becomes keen and the growing need for modernization. What shareholders actually got, 'herefore, was about equivalent to "19 per capita in 1938 and S20 in 1946. Making allowances for increasing population, therefore, the profits per capita have not changed at all. In fact, production has doubled, exports and imports more than doubled, payrolls are far higher, cost of living has gone up 50 percent if everything is included, and yet dividends remain at the same dollar ratio as before to population.
